The history of TFS-Tree Seed Production dates back in 1970s when the government launched national tree planting campaigns to rehabilitate degraded environments. This created high demand of tree seeds of local and introduced species for various end uses. The government recognized the seriousness of the situation and this led to the establishment of the National Tree Seed Programme (NTSP) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in 1989.

Following the government reforms, National Tree Seed Programme (NTSP) was transformed into Tanzania Tree Seed Agency (TTSA) which was established on 24th January 2003 with the purpose of enhancing sustainable supply of forest products and environmental conservation by producing, procuring and marketing high quality tree seeds and other propagating materials. Later in 2018 Tanzania Tree Seed Agency (TTSA) was transformed to TFS-Tree Seed Production following the reforms that merged activities previously performed by the former TTSA and TFS. 
 
According to the National Population Census of 2012, human growth rate in Tanzania is about 2.8% and approximately 75% of the country’s population lives in the rural areas and 92% of the Tanzanians use wood fuel as their source of energy. This has increased land demand, it is estimated that about 372,000 ha is being cleared every year. The country is experiencing rapid rates of deforestation and land degradation leading to the need for producing improved planting materials to mitigate this problem.

Over the years, TFS-Tree Seed Production has designed varied strategies to enable it deliver on its mandate to increase wood productivity through producing, procuring and marketing improved seeds and propagating materials. Sustainability is so fundamental to us, it is embedded in our strategic thinking. We are widening the scope of our mandate by involving, partnering, engaging and aligning with private sector, research institutions, consumers, suppliers and communities to make sure we satisfy the unmet needs of seeds in a sustainable way. TFS-Tree Seed Production has vast experience in seed production, procuring and marketing of seed and other propagating materials, with over 350 seed sources and dedicated team of researchers.
TFS-Tree Seed Production is investing more on tree improvement which is very important to the forestry development; application of high quality and diverse genetic material is essential to increase yield production maintain competitiveness and resilience of commercial sector and above all reduce the wood deficit facing the country.
It is also having access to good quality genetic stock and advocates in implementation of good silvicultural management which helps in reducing wood deficit; optimize productivity and quality in relation to end market use.
In particular, we are increasingly focusing on working more closely with our consumers and suppliers to ensure that our whole supply chain operates ethically and with integrity. As we continue with efforts to improve the production of seed and other propagating materials in Tanzania, we call for more partnerships to seed production, procurement and marketing to mitigate the negative effects of poor forest resource utilization for the common good.
